Syllabus: 2 Dimensional Design FALL 2013
Instructor: [email protected]
TA: Julia Feldman [email protected] phone: TBA Office hours: by appointment Course prerequisites: None Required for Design/Design Study Majors Elective for all other majors |
Goals and Objectives: This course is a project oriented studio experience that will introduce students to the basic language, skills, and processes of 2-dimensional designing. The intended outcome is to establish a solid foundation from which each individual can confidently understand and pursue the use of visual language in 2D space.
Student Learning Outcomes: Each student will receive basic vocabulary and process guidance relevant to designing. Each student will develop eye and hand skills for identifying and creating visual expressions in a variety of materials/media on planar surfaces. Each student will learn to present and discuss concepts and processes used in form generation.
Textbooks: No text is required for this course. Students will research artists/designers through our library system and the Internet. Each student will be required to purchase materials and equipment necessary for each project. The semester’s expenses typically range from $75. to $125. Expenditures often vary greatly from student to student based on visions, ingenuity, resources, and ambitions.
Projects: The semester projects will vary in length, depth, and focus. We will initiate our explorations with the basic understanding of design process, drawing, form, composition, value, color, perception, and concept. As the semester progresses, we will combine attributes as the projects become more complex At the conclusion of each assigned project, the class will present and discuss the resulting forms, the content addressed, and the individual student’s growth.
Evaluation: Each student will be evaluated as an individual, based on illustration of content understanding, growth, ambition, creative demands, participation, and presentation. Grades are based on an overview of the entire semester’s experience, with greater importance placed on the process than the product. The grade scale, A-F (with + & -), will be utilized in accordance with University policy. Individual reviews/consultations will be available at any time during the semester.
Attendance policy: The studio education structure is based on the necessity for a continuing dialogue amongst the students and between the students and the professor. Therefore, attendance is required and any unexcused absences, as well as tardiness, will be reflected in the final grade (i.e. 2 unexcused absences will lower the student’s grade by a full letter grade). Please view the university Attendance Regulation (REG02.20.3). Project work outside class time is required at a minimum level equal to the scheduled weekly class time. This schedule, which is necessary in promoting community interaction and positive work habits, will be discussed on the first day of classes. Procurement of materials and research information will be handled outside of scheduled class time.
Health and Safety: As part of your educational experience at the College of Design, you may be expected to participate in classes, field trips, and workshops in locations both on and off campus. You will be expected to fulfill your class assignments using equipment, tools, and possibly machinery. It is expected that you will use proper care and caution and will assume responsibility for your health and safety. ADN111 will primarily address the use of basic hands tools/equipment in the Design studio. Some power equipment may be utilized, under supervision, in the Materials Lab in the College of Design.
Honor Code: All students who enroll at NC State are required to adhere to the guidelines for academic integrity as outlined in the NCSU Code of Student Conduct.
