Managing Your Research using the Libraries
Library staff
ITTC Lab 1A, D.H. Hill Library
A hands-on workshop on how to use the NCSU library system for personal research and student assignments. The librarians showed how to effectively have students use both the physical library and the online library system. There was an explanation and demonstration of the online tools including use of the specific databases tailored to individual fields of research, using interlibrary loan, managing your research with RefWorks, and making use of other library services including the various technology available to check out. Where to find the lists to connect to the reference librarians and collection managers in a subject area for more in-depth research help was helpful. New to me: setting up search alerts and the availability of a full-size skeleton to check out.

Teaching Philosophy Peer Review Workshop, FIT
Research Building III, 230
After a short discussion of teaching philosophies, everyone exchanged their personal teaching philosophies for review and comments. I exchanged mine with an engineering doctoral student. His statement was six pages and very technical; I felt it was more suited to an explanation of teaching methods than a philosophy of teaching.
The response I received on my work was some of the phases and information was not understandable to non-artist or art educators. The two people reviewing my philosophy both had similar, very useful, comments.

IT Workshop: Roadmap to Designing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Service-Learning Project
Natalie Cooke, Nutrition Sciences doctoral student, FIT (Blended Workshop)
approximately 35 attended
This well attended two-part workshop covered the basics of Service-learning and the ways it differs from traditional community service and volunteering. Ms. Cooke spoke on the value and implementation of a service-learning class. She also discussed the amount of work involved in starting a program and the importance of the universities commitment to creating a hands-on learning environment across the curriculum. I see service-learning as a natural extension of the classroom, at all education levels and usable with any subject.

Assisting Students in Distress: NCSU Counseling Center, CoAT, FIT, OPA
Angel B. Johnson, Coordinator, Counseling Center Outreach
Talley Student Center, Walnut Room, 12:30 PM
Approximately 25 attended
Recognizing and assisting students in distress; what to do, who to call, follow-up, emergency situations to be aware of as a faculty member. NCSU has a very comprehensive program in place for identifying and helping students through the often difficult years at the university. Students are more stressed than past generations of students for several reasons: they have more ability to self-medicate and self-diagnose, many are less connected to friends because their main social interaction is via technology. There are huge financial pressures on many students, both in considering what it costs for an education and what the education will provide for them in terms of a job. In general, the current group of students have a fundamental lack of coping skills and have experience trauma in one or more areas including academic, financial, and/or family problems. As a group more students tend to over-commit, have performance anxiety, and suffer depression. There are early problems with drugs and/or alcohol and difficulties successfully handling interpersonal conflicts.

The U.S. Army Research Office: Research Opportunities for Academia and Industry, OPA/PDS
Overview of funders for research from all government branches; interesting information of new avenues for funding when so many sources have been cut off research dollars. The Department of Defense sets aside money for research of all kinds, including cancer, moral, safety, and other studies that may not seem like a likely source of research for the military. Currently, the Navy tends to have the most money for funding research.

Putting the Pieces Together: Creating an Academic Portfolio
Lead presenter: Susanna Klingenberg
approximately 35 people
Using WordPress to create a teaching portfolio.
WordPress is a very detailed and confusing program to me. It seems unnecessarily complicated and slowed down my process of creating the portfolio. When I changed to Weebly and the "drag and drop" system I was able to concentrate on content rather than adding learning a program. Weebly also offers a nice educational package both for educators and their classes.

Introduction to Teaching
Presenter: Susanna Klingenberg
Witherspoon 201 12:00 PM
Nine participants
Introduction to Teaching was a great workshop. Susanna created a fast-paced classroom environment and effortlessly modeled the activities she was teaching to a room full of future teachers. Her information was thought provoking and will be an invaluable in both planning and classroom teaching.
I appreciated the lesson plan worksheet and Susanna’s approach to creating an activity to filling in the useful form. Ending the workshop with a game of Bingo, based on correctly answering questions from the workshop; it was a great strategy to learn keep students excited and reinforce daily class material.
The research information on the short attention-span a student has for a lecture was a surprise to me. It will be put to good use, as will the ideas for the one to five-minute reinforcement techniques.
Some of the information was similar to my training for teaching K-8, including the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy. I have noticed learning to teach in the lower grades has been an asset to teaching at the college.

Write More: Tools for Increasing your Productivity as a Writer
The best advice is to write daily, write at the same time everyday. Google Docs is a simple, Web-based word processor online that allows for access to your writing from anywhere you have Internet.
It is hard to find time to write, especially if it is personal writing. When you do, you want to protect that time and use it as efficiently as possible. For me, staying focused is the hardest part of starting to write; implementing a plan to defer non-writing tasks for the sake of staying in writing mode and avoiding falling down a rabbit hole.
Use a written to-do list to get those pop-up tasks out of your head. It is easy get sidetracked and to do a simple task when it comes to mind during a writing session. It takes practice and routine to stay on task, particularly if you feel stuck and the other task seems quick and simple.

Helping Students Avoid Plagiarism: Cognitive Principles to Maximize Learning (and minimize cheating)
Presenter: James Lang
Workshop: focus English writing and reading
Tompkins G 118
10:30-11:30 AM
approximately 25 people
James Lang, author of “Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty”
Audience: teachers who are interested in learning how course design and daily classroom activities can help steer students away from plagiarism.
Sponsored by Office of Faculty Development, the Campus Writing and Speaking Program and the First-Year Writing Program
The workshop was not at all what I was expecting. I was anticipating a workshop on teaching students how to work with resources and take proper notes and citations while researching. The workshop had very good suggestions for posing questions that made it harder for students to plagiarise , I think there is still a disconnect for beginning researchers in what is "copied" and what is their own writing.
